Choosing the Life of the Future
Beauty is depicted differently from culture to culture. Our views of beauty also change as time progresses. The phenomenon of our culture’s pleasure for entertainment and beauty brings billions of dollars in annually. While some people view beauty as a gift, others view it as a need. When toddlers and children grow up viewing beauty as a need instead of a gift, their lives can be shaped based on the simple exchange of need verses natural beauty. Child beauty pageants take beauty, personality, and money and turn them into an entertainment that people can watch, win, and change from. They will begin to form their judgments of themselves and others at this young age and take it into their adulthood. The confidence and poise these stars may gang will help them down the road in life, but any negative psychological effect that are generated may neutralize the positive ones. I have learned that these beauty pageants can either cause children to have more positive benefits such as self-esteem and better personalities, or have harmful outcomes such as body image issues or physical and emotional paint. These cookie cutter children will grow to realize the truth behind the world and it’s ‘not so perfect’ plans for everyone. But most of all, when a child grows up in an environment that pushes the need to be perfect before everything else, there is damage that is inevitable. Thus, as our society’s views of beauty change, the children growing up in this time period will change too. It is our time to choose the life of the future.
